Do we REALLY know our ABC’s?

Do you remember The ABC Song from school that helped us remember the alphabet?

Now I know my ABC’s

Won’t you sing along with me

Next time won’t you sing with me

Now let’s pray we don’t have that song stuck in our heads for the next few days LOL!

What I would like stuck in our heads is the Word of God & His teachings. Now let’s get into our spiritual ABC’s!

A is for Attitude.

As Christians, it’s vital that we have a Godly attitude! But what is “attitude?”

Attitude refers to a person’s internal mindset or feelings. It’s a mental state or disposition toward a person, thing or situation. It involves beliefs, opinions & emotions. Attitudes can be positive, negative, or even indifferent & influence how a person perceives the world.

For example, someone might have a positive attitude toward exercise, believing it’s essential for a healthy life. While another person might have a negative attitude toward exercise, that it’s tiring & a waste of energy & time.

As Christians, we are to have the attitude (mindset) that Christ has.

I will give you one example & you can study the Bible to find out more about Christ’s attitude & pray for yours to align with His.

“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.”

‭‭Philippians‬ ‭2‬:‭5‬-‭7‬ ‭ESV‬‬

So Christ’s attitude is that although He is God, He didn’t focus on His position, rather, His mind was focused on how His position could save us!

So it is to be with us, let’s not have an attitude that our position may be higher than someone else’s, but let’s have the attitude of how we can use our position to encourage, help & bless!

B is for behavior.

Behavior is the external expression of those beliefs, opinions & emotions through our conduct. The way a person conducts themselves is influenced by their attitude, but also by external factors like social norms & circumstances.

For example, even if someone has a positive attitude toward exercise, they may not exercise regularly due to a busy schedule.

So you may have a positive attitude toward exercise, even if you’re not doing it at the moment. If someone spoke negatively to you about exercise, you would probably defend your positive position by telling them the benefits of exercise, that they should do it if they have the time & how you wish you had the time to do it as well.

So what do you need to do to make your behavior align with your positive attitude?

You need to make that choice!

C is for choice.

Behavior doesn’t necessarily involve deliberate, thoughtfully planned out decisive action, since we can choose to do nothing. Behavior can just be “talk,” as the exercise conversation example I gave above. A choice is a deliberate, thoughtfully planned out decision as to what we’re going to do about something.

Choices are the decisions a person makes based on their values, knowledge & circumstances. Choices involve thinking & deciding between different options, such as right & wrong (obedience or disobedience), & then carrying those actions out.

For example, if we have a positive attitude toward exercise, & we behave in a manner such as talking positively about it, then we have a choice to make our lifestyle align with that, or not.

Will we choose to carve out time to exercise by changing our schedule, plans, circumstances or even our job, or will we choose not to?

I’ll close with a Scriptural example (italics in bold mine):

“What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith (Attitude) but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” (Behavior) without giving them the things needed for the body, (Choice) what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”

‭‭James‬ ‭2‬:‭14‬-‭17‬ ‭ESV‬‬

So beloved, let’s keep our faith in Christ, conduct ourselves in a Godly manner & choose to obey God in all circumstances. In this, we will show that we truly know our ABC’s!
