In life, we will encounter storms – not just the meteorological kind, but the spiritual kind. Storms of adversity & persecution. Turbulent times that leave us feeling overwhelmed, hurt, alone & lost.
But in my walk with the Lord, I’ve learned that only certain things can be learned in storms.
1) Besides knowing & seeing God was with me, I learned He was preparing me for hardships so I could be ready for anything! So I wouldn’t be caught unawares! So I would pray first & count the cost before I made any major decisions! So I would make time to have “all my ducks in a row” so to speak!
Let me ask you…have you ever been unprepared for something? I’m not talking about truly unexpected things completely out of your control, we trust God heavily on those.
I’m talking about things like an interview. Or maybe you’re a player in a sports game. Or a school test. Or a trip.
Things you had some control over as in to set aside time to get ready for them. Like having your dress suit/gear ready, considering hard questions that may be asked & how you'll answer them, practicing, studying or packing.
Being unprepared is an awful feeling & position to be in.
2) I’ve learned (& unfortunately experienced) that being unprepared usually ends in failure! I’ve been there & done that & do my best to not allow that to happen.
So we do have some control over some things - control in that we can make decisions to set aside time & do what we need to do in order to be ready for whatever we know is coming. Like that interview, our game, our test, our trip etc.
But alas, there is hope! We can still trust God (& repent & cry out for help) for the storms we bring upon ourselves when we don't prepare & get ready!
But what about the unexpected storms?
“And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.”
Matthew 8:23-26 ESV
When a storm comes our way, expected or not, this Scripture tells us EXACTLY what to do! It’s actually quite simple!
1. Go to Jesus.
2. Don’t be afraid.
God did not give us a spirit of fear. See 2 Timothy 1:7.
3. Have great faith.
These three things open the door to allowing Jesus to speak to our storms!
It’s three simple steps! When a storm hits, we usually don’t have much time to do what we need to do. A lot of times, we have to decide quickly, so I believe God was very merciful on us to keep this simple!
Go to Him, don’t be afraid & have great faith!
I know this sounds very general, but when you allow Jesus to speak to your storms, besides bringing calmness, He also works out all the details. And that’s a 3rd thing I learned…God doesn't forget or miss anything!
I’ve learned much more than this in my storms & I pray this message helps give you a new perspective.
