“Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.””
Mark 1:16-17 ESV
This verse is the foundation of how the Church grows!
Now, I’ll admit, I know very little about actual fishing, but I do know some very important things that matter a great deal about fishing!
Location
Season
Timing
Bait
Well y’all, this also happens to be our spiritual fishing map!
1-Our location is here! Where we are right now!
2-In regards to the season, the harvest is plentiful but laborers are needed! We are needed!
Matthew 9:37-38
3-The time is now!
4-The bait is quite simple, it’s the fruit of the Spirit!
Before I list that fruit, let me ask you, do you, or would you, enjoy being around someone who dislikes you or even hates you?
Probably not! I want to be around people who love me!
Do you, or would you, enjoy being around someone who is sad & depressed all the time?
Probably not! I want to be around people that are joyful!
Do you, or would you, enjoy being around someone who quarrels with you all the time?
Probably not! I want to be around people who are peaceful!
And so on & so forth…
Thus are the fruits of the spirit:
“…love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control….”
Galatians 5:22-23 ESV
This fruit is what will attract people to want to be around & with us.
Now the location, season, timing & bait are just the map part.
We need a plan! Let’s discuss the plan part really quick…the plan to win souls!
What's really cool is that we can remember the plan by the very word FISH!
-Friendship
-Investment
-Sharing
-Helping
When we're fishing for men, (trying to win souls for Christ), this requires us to be a friend, invest time with these people, share the Gospel with them & help them through life.
It’s all about relationship!
That’s why we say we’re not religious, but we have a relationship with the Lord.
It’s as simple as that.
So I want to encourage ya’ll to go fishing…take these steps...
Pray & ask God to help you be a friend to someone who needs Christ. Invest time in this person. Share the Gospel with them & help them through life.
The goal is that eventually they will see Christ in you & get saved!
Now let's go fishing ya'll! After all, we are fishers of men!
